How to choose a gift for your Mother in law

Leaving the obvious jokes aside, your mother in law is an important part of the family and when it comes to those times of the year when we traditionally give gifts – Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries spring to mind – careful consideration needs to be taken in order to make sure that she is rewarded with an appropriate offering. Indeed, if we were to write a book on how to choose a gift for your mother in law the first suggestion would be straightforward: ask your spouse what she would like!

Drawing up a shortlist of suggestions makes the process easier, and if you use the internet to search for suggestions it becomes more efficient still. Your mother in law may be partial to a certain wine or spirit, or may enjoy a gift car entitling her to a day at a spa or a stay in a country hotel; she may prefer a simple gift of flowers or chocolates, or an addition to a collection that she treasures.

Whatever it is that she wants or needs, the best person to give you a clue as to how to choose a gift for your mother in law remains your husband or wife. Buying blind is never a good idea for mistakes can lead to misunderstanding, so our advice is to keep it simple, not too extravagant, and make sure that you use the available resources – the internet and advice – in order to make sure your search is less troublesome and ultimately more successful.
