The year 1914 was one that would change the face of the world for ever, especially for those residing in Europe. On June 28th the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife, was assassinated in Sarajevo, an event that had its roots in the political turmoil rife in central Europe at the time, and the strained relations between the neighbouring countries would lead to increased tension.
1919 Newspaper GiftThe First World War, otherwise known as the Great War, which began in 1914 had left the world a changed place, particularly in the European arena where many millions of young men had lost their lives fighting for their country, yet it was in 1919 that the Treaty of Versailles, the agreement officially ending the war, was finally signed.
1929 Newspaper GiftsThe 1920’s had seen the world emerge from the devastating effects of the decade before, a decade in which many millions had lost their lives in the Great War, and by the end of the decade, in 1929, those days, while not forgotten, were a distant memory for many.
1934 Newspaper GiftsThe early 1930’s were years when the political landscape in Europe was taking a sinister turn, as the memories of the First World War faded only to be usurped by increasing tension in the region. The financial crash of 1929 led to world recession, and in times of crisis it is far from unusual for extreme politics to come to the fore.
1939 Newspaper GiftsSeptember 3rd, 1939 will always be remembered as one of the darkest days of the 20th century for it was that day, at precisely 11am, on which Great Britain declared war on Germany. Adolf Hitler had refused an ultimatum to withdraw his troops from Poland and the result was inevitable.
1944 Newspaper GiftsWith the Second World War raging around the world now, as it had been for five years, 1944 was a year of turmoil and tragedy in which all the people of many countries could do was wait, and fight. The turning point of 1944 came with the Normandy Landings, an ambitious invasion of occupied France by allied troops that was to be the beginning of the end of the war in Europe, with June 6th the day that Operation Overlord – as the deployment was known – began.
1948 Newspaper GiftsThe Second World War was still a recent memory and the effects of it still being felt as the world struggled to come to terms with the economic uncertainty that came about as a result, but by 1948 things were beginning to move forward and the first sign of advancement was the Foreign Assistance Act in which the USA agreed to provide aid to help rebuild Europe to the tune of billions of dollars.
1949 Newspaper GiftsThe year 1949 was a watershed in many ways, one which signalled the transition from the aftermath of the Second World War to the new era of peace and growth. With the signing of the Geneva Convention, a political milestone still regarded today, and the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany the world was seemingly ready to move forward and a bright light became visible on many a horizon.
1953 Newspaper GiftsThe post war years had seen Great Britain slowly regain composure as the exact toll that the war had taken began to be assessed, and it is notable that it took until 1953 before the rationing of sugar, introduced during the war years, could be lifted.
1954 Newspaper GiftsThe year 1954 was one of those that celebrated another step away from the war years, and the growing popularity of rock ‘n’ roll – the new music phenomenon that had taken first the USA and then the rest of the world by storm – continued to stamp its authority as hits by Bill Haley and the Comets and the legendary Elvis Presley topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
1958 Newspaper GiftsThe 1950’s was a decade of change with people leaving the war years behind and rebuilding their lives and 1958 saw many forward steps including the foundation of NASA, the driving force behind space exploration right up until now.
1959 Newspaper GiftsThe year 1959 – only 14 years after the end of the Second World War – seemed a lifetime removed from those dark and tragic days, and the world was moving forward now in terms of political advancement and technological development. One such came from the mind of the great engineer Alec Issigonis who, in 1959, introduced a car that would revolutionise the motor industry in a way that has never been repeated.

This was the year in which the Beatles phenomenon gathered pace at an alarming rate, as the Fab Four continued to churn out hit after hit with the likes of ‘All my loving’ and ‘I want to hold your hand’ providing the backdrop to the years events.
1969 ranks as one of the most memorable years in 20th century history, for this was the year in which man first set foot on the moon. 1979 Newspaper GiftsThe 1970’s had been a mixed decade – boom years in many cases but fraught with economic and political problems elsewhere – and it is fitting that 1979 saw a notable first with the first and, so far, only female Prime Minister – Margaret Thatcher – taking up office for the Conservative party for what would be a tumultuous and memorable, if often controversial, tenure.

1988 Newspaper GiftsThe 1980’s were a decade that promoted wealth and promised much, but in truth they were to lay the seeds for a much more troubled time to come. 1988, the year in which George Bush became President in the USA while Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as Prime Minister in Great Britain continued, will be remembered by many as a year in which international terrorism hit the world stage.
1991 Newspaper GiftsThe year of 1991 saw the world on the cusp of great change as following the end of the Iran-Iraq war a few years prior, Saddam Hussein of Iraq began to build up his military forces.
