Full Description!

The year 1914 was one that would change the face of the world for ever, especially for those residing in Europe. On June 28th the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife, was assassinated in Sarajevo, an event that had its roots in the political turmoil rife in central Europe at the time, and the strained relations between the neighbouring countries would lead to increased tension.

On August 2nd German troops took up occupancy in Luxembourg, and a series of unmatched ultimatums from others led Germany to declare war on France, having already done so with regard to Russia. Two days later, after Germany invaded neutral Belgium, Great Britain declared war on Germany, and so the most deadly and terrible war in history began.

The First World War, also known as the Great War, claimed the lives of many millions of young men of many different nationalities, and would come to an end in 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles.

In the United Kingdom home rule for Ireland was granted, but in truth the entire year was one of war and terror as the trouble in Europe escalated. More and more countries became involved, with fierce fighting on the battlefields of France seeing hundreds of thousands of men killed in action, and across Europe – and the world, as Japan had also begun hostilities in the Far East – wars raged with abandon, with no end in sight.

On a lighter note and stainless steel made its first appearance in domestic items in 1914, Henry Ford saw sales reach quarter of a million cars for the first time, and China declared it would remain neutral in the ongoing hostilities.
