Full Description!

Battles raged across Europe with great loss of life on both the allied and the German sides, and in October the nurse Edith Cavell – a British nurse- was famously executed by the Germans after being caught helping escapees in Belgium.

The horrors of war are everywhere and Italy joins the side of the Allies in May, while the Turks inflict terrible damage on Australian and New Zealand troops arriving in on their shores.
Meanwhile in America – untroubled by the war in Europe – the Rocky Mountain National Park is opened in January, giving the public access to vast tracts of land, and a proposal to allow women to vote is rejected by the House of Representatives.

A new weapon is unleashed on the world early in the year when the Germans use – for the first time – poison gas on the Russians; chemical warfare is with us, and remains to this day.
In November science sees a breakthrough with Einstein’s famous Theory of General Relativity, still a staple of physics to this day, and in America a Stutz driven by Gil Anderson achieves a new lands speed record of 102.6mph in runs near New York.

Still on motoring, and in Detroit a world first is installed at a notorious junction – the ‘Stop’ sign would soon become widespread on roads across the world.
