The First World War, otherwise known as the Great War, which began in 1914 had left the world a changed place, particularly in the European arena where many millions of young men had lost their lives fighting for their country, yet it was in 1919 that the Treaty of Versailles, the agreement officially ending the war, was finally signed.

This momentous document signalled the restoration of peace and was signed on June 28th, a date forever etched on the minds of those who survive from that era. The formation of the League of Nations in the January of 1919 was a landmark moment too, and would form the basis of NATO several decades later, and while the world set about recovering from the tolls of the war there was much change afoot.

In the arts there was a move towards more abstract thinking and looser ideas as exemplified by the creation of the revolutionary and very influential ‘Bauhaus’ movement in the April of 1919, this being considered the beginning of the age of modernism which would have a profound effect on future architecture as well as artistic thinking, while in Italy in February Benito Mussolini forms his Fascist Party, a political model that would be much admired by a young Adolf Hitler and upon which he would base his own future party.

1919 represents not just the end of an era but the beginning of another for while the Great War was finally over much rebuilding was necessary, and the political face of the world was changing again at a very fast rate.
