Coming so soon after the end of the Great War 1920 was a year of uncertainty; notably, one Adolf Hitler began his rise to prominence in this year when he presented his ideals of National Socialism to a fractured Germany in Munich early in the year. In America political confusion reigned with the refusal to recognise the Treaty of Versailles, while in the sporting world the legendary Babe Ruth became the highest valued player in history when he moved from Boston Red Sox to New York Yankees for a then colossal $125,000.

The Irish War of Independence also took place in 1920, and is remembered for the tragic events of Bloody Sunday, November 21st, when British Forces fired on spectators and players during a football match at Croke Park with the loss of 14 lives.

Commercial radio came into being in 1920 in the USA, and Joan of Arc was canonised in front of 30,000 people in Rome in May.
