On a quirky note, it was in 1920 that the US postal service banned the sending of children by parcel post, and in France the sale of contraceptives was prohibited. A different kind of prohibition came into being in the USA early in 1920 with the banning of the sale of alcohol, a move that led to the creation of underground bars known as ‘speak easy’s’, while Pancho Villa surrenders in Mexico after a lengthy and bloody revolution.
A significant ceremony that is still recognised today took place in Westminster Abbey with the burial of the Unknown Warrior, and echoes of the war abounded aplenty. The Irish War of Independence also took place in 1920, and is remembered for the tragic events of Bloody Sunday, November 21st, when British Forces fired on spectators and players during a football match at Croke Park with the loss of 14 lives.
Commercial radio came into being in 1920 in the USA, and Joan of Arc was canonised in front of 30,000 people in Rome in May.
