The 1920’s had seen the world emerge from the devastating effects of the decade before, a decade in which many millions had lost their lives in the Great War, and by the end of the decade, in 1929, those days, while not forgotten, were a distant memory for many. This was a decade of growth and change, and one that would be replicated in many ways in the years following the next World War which was, unknown to those living in and enjoying 1929, only to close.
One great breakthrough of 1929 was the discovery of penicillin by the scientist Alexander Fleming, a discovery that ranks very high on the list of the 20th century’s most important landmarks. Penicillin would change medicine forever, and increase the chances of treating many ailments.
In British politics much change was underway with the defeat of Stanley Baldwin of the Conservative party by the Labour leader Ramsey MacDonald, a result that signified a sea change in terms of political thinking in the United Kingdom, while America also saw change as president Herbert Hoover took over from the outgoing Calvin Coolidge.
1929 was the year in which the Vatican City was granted independence from Italy, becoming a state in its own right as it remains today, and also the year in which red telephone booths first appeared on the streets of London, while in the world of air travel the mighty German airship the Graf Zeppelin completed an exhausting round the world flight as the people of the world strove for more freedom to travel.
