Full Description!
Perhaps the most remarkable event of the year occurred on April 18th, when the world renowned BBC radio news service transmitted this now legendary announcement: “There is no news”.
In May of 1930 Amy Johnson became a household name when she landed her aeroplane in Darwin, Australia, becoming the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, while also in the air a young lady by the name of Ellen Church became the very first Air Stewardess in the world. An aeronautical tragedy also occurred in 1930 when the British airship R101 crashed in France on its maiden voyage in October.
The summer of 1930 saw a sporting milestone with the staging of the very first Football World Cup; Uruguay would beat Argentina 4-2 in the final. It was in 1930 that Haile Selassie was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia, while in the USA the country was in the grip of the Great Depression, an economic crisis the likes of which had never been seen.
A useful and long lived invention from 1930 was Scotch Tape, created by the 3M organisation, while in Germany the National Socialist Party became the second biggest in the country, a portent of things to come.
