Full Description!
The early 1930’s were years when the political landscape in Europe was taking a sinister turn, as the memories of the First World War faded only to be usurped by increasing tension in the region. The financial crash of 1929 led to world recession, and in times of crisis it is far from unusual for extreme politics to come to the fore. This is what happened in Germany where the National Socialist party, led by the charismatic Adolf Hitler, was taking a stranglehold.
Hitler had, in fact, declared himself leader of his country in 1934, and at the same time Josef Stalin was wreaking his murderous way in Russia as the politics of the world entered a period of turmoil. Nevertheless, this was an era of high glamour, one where Hollywood was arguably at the height of its powers and such superstars as Clarke Gable were the idols of millions. Another screen idol made his debut that year, and Donald Duck remains one of the most endearing cartoon characters even today.
The bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, considered folk heroes rather than criminals by many, were shot and killed in ambush in May of 1934 and their legend continues in song and film to this day, while in another popular culture legend the first sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was reported in the press.
In the world of sport Italy won the World Cup after beating Czechoslovakia in the final, while the musical superstar of the year was the enduring and still popular Cole Porter.
