In aviation Amelia Earhart made a name for herself by becoming the first person to fly sole from Hawaii to California, and she would go on to become one of the great flyers of the early days, while on January the 8th a baby named Elvis Aron Presley was born, the world unaware of the impact he would have in twenty years time.

TE Lawrence – the legendary Lawrence of Arabia – died when he crashed his motorcycle on May 19th, 1935, and the Alcoholics Anonymous self help group was founded in Akron, Ohio, while in Oklahoma City motorists encountered the first of what would become a worldwide blight for car drivers – parking meters – in July of this year.
The Penguin publishing house published its first books in 1935, thus revolutionising the literary world, and Stanley Baldwin becomes Prime Minister in Britain but with a much reduce majority.
In what is now Pakistan – a region then called Quetta – an earthquake kills 40,000 people in May 1935, while the store Coopers Inc sells the world’s first pair of briefs.
