Full Description!

September 3rd, 1939 will always be remembered as one of the darkest days of the 20th century for it was that day, at precisely 11am, on which Great Britain declared war on Germany. Adolf Hitler had refused an ultimatum to withdraw his troops from Poland and the result was inevitable. The ensuing six years of war would involve countries from across the globe and result in great loss of life and the destruction of many cities, and the eventual deployment of the atomic bomb by the allies on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 would be the most horrific acts in the history of war.

The resilience of people not just in Britain but across the world to the German threat led to much of note, and with America not yet involved in the conflict it was preoccupied with everyday life. In the entertainment world the ground breaking films ‘Gone with the Wind’ – an American civil war classic of great repute –and ‘The Wizard of Oz’, featuring Judy Garland and still one of the most popular films in the world, wowed audiences, while Glenn Miller, already a dance hall favourite with his big band style, epitomised the popular music of the day.

All in all, however, 1939 was a year of political turmoil, one in which it became impossible to predict the state of affairs in the foreseeable future, and in Europe in particular people began to prepare for a long hard few years ahead as war raged across the world.
