Full Description!
With the Second World War raging around the world now, as it had been for five years, 1944 was a year of turmoil and tragedy in which all the people of many countries could do was wait, and fight. The turning point of 1944 came with the Normandy Landings, an ambitious invasion of occupied France by allied troops that was to be the beginning of the end of the war in Europe, with June 6th the day that Operation Overlord – as the deployment was known – began.
This momentous occasion has gone down in history as one of the most important dates in the 20th century, and rightfully so, for it took great courage and planning to carry out.
Germany had shown a great advance in technology with the first V2 rockets, more deadly and accurate than the preceding V1 ‘doodlebugs’, falling on London, and the timing of the Normandy Landings would be crucial in keeping the enemy from utilising this technology to a greater degree.
1944 was the year in which food shortages became serious and UK residents, as well as those across the Atlantic, were asked to grow what they could at home in order to bolster supplies. In the entertainment world the great band leader Glenn Miller, a favourite with the troops, disappeared while on a flight across the English Channel during 1944, never to be seen again.
August 25th saw scenes of joy as Paris was liberated, and an orchestrated attack by British Lancaster Bombers resulted in the sinking of the pride of the German fleet, the Tirpitz, bringing the close of the war ever closer.
