The early part of 1945 had seen the German military machine crumbling as a series of defeats led to it being weakened, this following the Normandy landings of 1944, while the Red Army of Russia had liberated the Nazi death camps of Auschwitz and elsewhere earlier in the year.
April had seen British Lancaster bombers dropping a less deadly cargo when a squadron was deployed to drop food over the Netherlands to help the starving population, while Adolf Hitler famously committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin on the last day of April.
June saw the signing of the significant UN Charter, and away from all of the wartime news the classic novel Animal Farm, a political satire by George Orwell, was first published in August 1945.
In France, the right for women to vote is granted for the very first time while the first ballpoint pens – now a ubiquitous household item – go on sale in a US department store in October of 1945. History also records the discovery of the Nag Hammadi scriptures in 1945, the discovery of microwave cooking, the introduction of an oral penicillin antibiotic and the creation – in late December – of the World Bank.
