Full Description!
The Second World War was still a recent memory and the effects of it still being felt as the world struggled to come to terms with the economic uncertainty that came about as a result, but by 1948 things were beginning to move forward and the first sign of advancement was the Foreign Assistance Act in which the USA agreed to provide aid to help rebuild Europe to the tune of billions of dollars.
1948 also saw the declaration of Israel as a state in its own right, something that still has reverberations in world politics today, while back in Britain a landmark move was signalled with the creation of the National Health Service.
In Germany the Russians had laid claim to Berlin and commenced a blockade, this leading to the famous Berlin Airlift in which the UK and USA commenced a series of flights taking vital supplies to the city in an effort to overcome the problem. The result would be the creation of two cities – West and East Berlin – with the eastern half under Russian control.
Minds were diverted from the horrors of the past few years as London played host to the summer Olympic Games in 1948, and the event was a great success, while the number of households in the world embracing the new technology that was television reached one million for the first time.
In this year the first long playing record was pressed, signalling the start of half a century of ‘albums’ which would only see change when the CD eventually surpassed vinyl as the format of choice, while the nationalisation of the railways saw the creation of British Rail.
