Full Description!
The year 1949 was a watershed in many ways, one which signalled the transition from the aftermath of the Second World War to the new era of peace and growth. With the signing of the Geneva Convention, a political milestone still regarded today, and the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany the world was seemingly ready to move forward and a bright light became visible on many a horizon.
Technology advanced at a rate unheard of before as the lull that had been seen in the war years abated, and while the testing of the first Russian atomic bomb heralded a sign of things less than cheerful, the first flight of the Comet, the world’s first commercial jet airliner, in Britain in 1949 paved the way for world travel to become a reality for more than just the very rich.
Other important milestones included the creation of NATO, an organisation still as important sixty years on as it was in 1949, and the perfection of colour television, something that would transform the way we viewed the world. Still on television and the first soap opera, so called after the product popularly advertised in the commercial breaks, was shown thus introducing something that we now take for granted.
1949 also saw the introduction of the 45rpm record, soon to become a staple part of entertainment, and also the first commercially available computer from the Ferranti organisation, while the publication of ‘1984’, George Orwell’s famous novel that predicted a bleak future 35 years down the line, met with great critical acclaim.
