Full Description!
The post war years had seen Great Britain slowly regain composure as the exact toll that the war had taken began to be assessed, and it is notable that it took until 1953 before the rationing of sugar, introduced during the war years, could be lifted.
A much bigger event hogged the headlines in 1953, however, for this was the year in which our current Queen was crowned. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on June 2nd and was an event covered by television cameras the world over. Broadcast live on television, and believed to the first event broadcast live in colour, it was watched by many millions of people and gave the British public a reason to rejoice after so many years of hardship and uncertainty.
It may seem amazing to think but the very first transistor radios, one of the most revolutionary devices of the 20th century, were invented in 1953 in the USA, and other notable revelations included the announcement that the scientists Francis Crick and James Watson, an Anglo- American pairing, had discovered the puzzle behind DNA and revealed their now legendary double helix discovery, something which had far reaching influence on the future of medicine and criminology.
The literary world saw a couple of breakthroughs in 1953 with the publication of the first James Bond novel, Casino Royale written by Ian Fleming, and the first edition of Playboy magazine which featured soon to be superstar Marilyn Monroe as its first centrefold.
