Full Description!
The year 1954 was one of those that celebrated another step away from the war years, and the growing popularity of rock ‘n’ roll – the new music phenomenon that had taken first the USA and then the rest of the world by storm – continued to stamp its authority as hits by Bill Haley and the Comets and the legendary Elvis Presley topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
In sporting terms the year saw the breakthrough of a sub four minute mile, run by the British athlete Roger Bannister, and the West German football team took the World Cup by defeating Hungary in the finals played in Switzerland.
1954 was the year in which rationing, introduced in the war years, was finally ceased in Britain, and the year in which General Motors, the American automobile giant, manufactured its 50 millionth car.
Medical history was made with the first organ transplants, carried out in 1954 in the cities of Boston, USA, and Paris in France, while mass vaccinations against polio were first carried out following the recent discovery of a working vaccine.
Russia announced the opening of the world’s first atomic power station in this year, while Germany displayed its return to the market with the introduction of the now legendary ‘Gullwing’ door Mercedes Benz 300SL.
This was the year in which Marilyn Monroe married baseball star Joe Di Maggio, and in which the multi award winning film White Christmas carried all before it, while a darker note was signalled by the test of the first Hydrogen Bomb, successfully detonated on the Bikini Atoll.
