It was in May of 1955 that West Germany became an official country, having been split from East Germany in the carve up following the war years, and immediately following its recognition as such West Germany joined the emerging NATO, an essential forum for countries in that era.
In Britain, the legal world saw great changes with the hanging of Ruth Ellis in July; having been found guilty of murder, Ellis became the last woman to be executed in the UK as the death penalty was banished soon after.
In the arts world the controversial novel Lolita, by Russian author Vladimir Nabokov, was published in September 1955, and the first edition of the Guinness Book of Records – soon to be a Christmas standard for many – was also published in this year.
Science mourned a giant when Albert Einstein died in New Jersey, USA, on April the 18th, and in sport a great tragedy occurred at the Le Mans 24 hour motor race in France when a Mercedes Benz crashed and flew into the crowd, resulting in the death of 83 people and injuries to over 100 more. Mercedes Benz withdrew from motor racing immediately, and the sport was banned on Swiss soil as a result.
