The 1950’s was a decade of change with people leaving the war years behind and rebuilding their lives and 1958 saw many forward steps including the foundation of NASA, the driving force behind space exploration right up until now.
The world became a smaller place with the instigation of the first transatlantic service by jet airliner, with flights on the revolutionary Comet from London to New York, while the news that Elvis Presley had been called up by the army led to much publicity for the superstar actor and singer.
On a sadder note February 6th of 1958 was a black day in sporting history as an aircraft carrying the Manchester United team, including some of the brightest talent in soccer, crashed on takeoff in Munich leaving 21 dead, including seven of the brightly starred team. Later that year Brazil would win the World Cup, held in Sweden.
1958 was the year in which the modem, a device almost ubiquitous these days, was invented, allowing communication between computers and leading to a revolution in technology the likes of which is arguably the greatest ever, while another daily device that we now take for granted – the infra red remote control – also made its debut in 1958.
That this was a year of change is exemplified by the first Toyota cars being sold in America, and also by the first satellite launch in the USA. Elsewhere in the world China began a period of deadly famine in which, over the next four years, 30 million people would perish.
