Full Description!
The year 1959 – only 14 years after the end of the Second World War – seemed a lifetime removed from those dark and tragic days, and the world was moving forward now in terms of political advancement and technological development. One such came from the mind of the great engineer Alec Issigonis who, in 1959, introduced a car that would revolutionise the motor industry in a way that has never been repeated. The Mini went on sale in the UK in this year, a bold and brilliant compact vehicle for the masses, and achieved instant popularity thanks to its cute design, stunning handling and excellent price – just under £500.
Other milestones in 1959 included the introduction of the advanced Boeing 707 jet airliner, a craft that cut travel times considerably and opened up world travel to a greater audience, while also in the air the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper, three of music’s shining stars, left a legacy that would reverberate through the music world for years to come.
The changing face of politics saw Harold Macmillan – the conservative leader – become Prime Minister of the UK, beating Labour’s Hugh Gaitskell, while the space race was well underway with Russia sending the Lunar probes into orbit, one of which crashed on the moon, and America launching the first orbiting weather station.
Looking forward and 1959 also saw the invention of the microchip, an invention whose influence could not possibly have been gauged back then, and the M1 motorway was opened, a move that would change the face of British motoring for evermore.
