Full Description!
A little known pop group changed their name to a more simple moniker than they had previously held in August of 1960, and began a residence at a club in Hamburg, Germany, that would – arguably – change the face of popular music forever: the Beatles had arrived, the rest of the decade would be full of their music and their faces would become among the most famous in the world.
The legal world saw the Penguin books publishing house found not guilty in the famous Lady Chatterley’s Lover obscenity case, while the 1960 Summer Olympics, held in Rome, Italy, saw Cassius Clay take gold in the heavyweight boxing competition. Clay would later change his name to Muhammad Ali and go on to be one of the most famous sportsmen in the world.
Also in 1960 John F Kennedy was elected President of the USA, the first successful kidney transplant is carried out in Edinburgh by Michael Woodruff, and the Archbishop of Canterbury held an historic face to face meeting with the pope, the first such by an Anglican leader in 500 years.
