Full Description!
For many the year 1964 can be summarised by one word, a word which – in fact – was coined in that year: Beatlemania!
This was the year in which the Beatles phenomenon gathered pace at an alarming rate, as the Fab Four continued to churn out hit after hit with the likes of ‘All my loving’ and ‘I want to hold your hand’ providing the backdrop to the years events.
1964 provided a musical scene of much talent, with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Supremes among the young superstars of the day, while in the sporting arena the world witnessed two of the great boxers of all time – Cassius Clay and Sonny Liston – battle for the heavyweight title, with Clay, soon to change his name to Muhammad Ali, taking the spoils.
In 1964 the death penalty was finally abolished in the UK, while the islkand of Malta gained independence, and the first commitment between Britain and France to build a tunnel under the channel was announced, but the dream would not be realised until many years later.
On the world stage the Vietnam War was raging in the far east where many American servicemen were being killed, leading to protests in the USA about the ongoing conflict, and the UK government, anticipating a population explosion, announced the creation of ‘New Towns’ from which sprung the creation of Milton Keynes and the legendary concrete cows.
The great train robbers were tried in this year with Ronnie Biggs and his cohorts being sentenced to 30 years, while in the entertainment world Sidney Poitier became the first black actor to win a ‘best actor Oscar – for his role in ‘In the Heat of the Night’ – thus signalling a sea change in Hollywood.
