The year 1965 came in the middle of a decade of change, both cultural and political. The Beatles had the world at their feet with their new brand of pop music, the Cold War was in full swing and was even beginning to branch out into space, and the death of Sir Winston Churchill saw the biggest state funeral the world had seen up that point, the legendary English statesman being laid to rest on January 30th.

Full Description!

In the world of entertainment one of the biggest films of the decade – indeed of all time – ‘The Sound of Music’ premiered in New York on March 2nd, and a few days later over 3,000 troops arrived in Vietnam, signifying the beginning of the lengthy and bloody Vietnam War.

Russia took first blood in the space race when, on March 18th, Cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov became the first man to walk in space after leaving the capsule of Voskhod 2 for a 12 minute stroll, while America launched the latest in its series of exploratory probes, Ranger 9.

In Britain, April saw the opening of the Pennine Way, a designated walk down the backbone of England that is still in use today, and Scottish racing drover Jim Clark completes an historic double by winning the World Drivers’ Championship and the Indianapolis 500, both in a Lotus, in the same year.

The music world is rocked when folk hero Bob Dylan ‘goes electric’, the Beatles make history by playing the Shea Stadium and the classic animated TV show Thunderbirds makes its debut.
