Full Description!
1969 ranks as one of the most memorable years in 20th century history, for this was the year in which man first set foot on the moon. Millions watched on television as, on the 20th July, Neil Armstrong stepped down from the lunar module and uttered the immortal words ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’ and the world held its breath when the returning astronauts, Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin and Michael Collins, returned to earth successfully a few days later, plunging into the sea in the specially designed Apollo 11 return capsule.
It was a momentous year for music too, as in what has become widely regarded as the culmination of the ‘swinging sixties’ folklore, a time of revival and rebirth, 400,000 people watched the likes of Jimi Hendrix and others perform at the now legendary Woodstock music festival, an event that spawned a thousand imitators in the next decades.
On the seas and with travel now a popular pastime the Queen Elizabeth 2, the most luxurious and advanced ocean liner of her time, entered service with the Cunard line, while in the sky the first test flights of the beautiful supersonic airliner, the Anglo-French Concorde, took place in France.
1969 had much to offer a rapidly changing world – items we take for granted such as the microprocessor and the cash dispenser were first seen in this year – and the changing face of entertainment saw the revolutionary and ground-breaking Monty Pythons Flying Circus TV show compete with the evergreen Beatles, now at the end of their short but iconic career, for air time.
