Full Description!
In April, however, the world was shocked to hear that the Beatles were no more, and in many ways an era ended right then. Technology was taking great strides forward and in March 1970 the Concorde, an Anglo-French supersonic airliner that many thought would change air travel for ever, made its first supersonic flight. Ironically, the first commercial airliner to reach twice the speed of sound would be the Tupelov Tu144, a Russian copy of the Concorde, in May 1970. The aeroplane that did change the face of air travel – the gigantic Boeing 747 – had made its first commercial journey from New York to London in January of 1970.
The space race continued apace with the launch of Soyuz 9 – a two man craft – by the Russians in June, just two months after the near-tragic journey of Apollo 13, which was crippled in space by an exploding oxygen tank during its April flight and made it back to earth in heart stopping style.
With fashion and attitude changing, 1970 would herald a decade of change and world growth, and one of increasing political uncertainty that followed the equally unstable ‘60’s.
