Full Description!

In March, after a period of no confidence, Harold Wilson resigned as Prime Minister of Britain, while in the world of technology the Apple Computer Company came into being in April 1976.

In June, the tallest free standing building in the world – the CN Tower in Toronto – opens to the public, while the summer of 1976 sees the UK basking in the longest and hottest heat wave every recorded in the country.

July sees the beginning of the Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, while the Viking 1 probe lands on Mars, and the sporting world is rocked when Austrian Niki Lauda, the reigning Formula One World Champion, suffers life threatening burns as his Ferrari crashes during the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Lauda would return to racing, remarkably, later that year and win the title again in 1977, but the fate of the Nurburgring, 14 mile epic circuit, was sealed.

In London in August the chimes of Big Ben failed to be heard when the clock developed a fault in its mechanism, a rare occurrence indeed, while the UK also saw advances in transport with the introduction of the advanced Intercity 125 high speed train on the nation’s rail networks.

In music, the rock group U2 – later to achieve world domination in their field – were formed in Dublin, Ireland, and the Sex Pistols headed the punk explosion that would rock the music establishment for a brief but inspirational time.
