Full Description!
The 1970’s had been a mixed decade – boom years in many cases but fraught with economic and political problems elsewhere – and it is fitting that 1979 saw a notable first with the first and, so far, only female Prime Minister – Margaret Thatcher – taking up office for the Conservative party for what would be a tumultuous and memorable, if often controversial, tenure.
Thatcher took charge at a time when the IRA were at their most active, and it was in this year that Lord Mountbatten was assassinated while onboard a boat in September. Also killed by the IRA this year was politician Airey Neave in a car bomb attack in London.
On a lighter note, the south coast town of Brighton saw the opening of the first nudist beach in the UK, an event that had its fans and its opponents in equal numbers, while in space this was a busy year with the Voyager 1 probe returning stunning photographs of the rings of Saturn and the European Space Agency launching the first of a long line of Ariane rockets.
In the entertainment world the British rock band Pink Floyd took the world by storm with the super successful double concept album ‘The Wall’, and Ridley Scott redefined the horror film genre with the influential and ground breaking ‘Alien’, a film that took horror into space and one that spawned many imitators along the way.
Notable inventions included the launch of the very first Sony Walkman and the beginning of the very first commercial mobile phone network in the USA, a development that would have far flung consequences in shaping the future of communications.
