The opening year of the 1980’s saw British industry in a state of turmoil as strikes crippled the steel industry as a war of words with the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher led to growing unrest, while further political unrest came with the announcement that American cruise missiles were being deployed at the British air base at Greenham Common.
The summer saw the Olympic Games take place in Moscow in the USSR, a venue that had led to some countries boycotting the event, and British athletes brought home a healthy tally of medals including five golds.
Later in the year Queen Elizabeth II made history by becoming the first reigning UK monarch to visit the Vatican, and Margaret Thatcher continued to make the headlines with her famous ‘the lady’s not for turning’ speech in the face of considerable unrest within the Conservative party.
In the entertainment world the shocking news of the assassination of John Lennon, formerly of the Beatles, outside his apartment in New York led to widespread outpourings of grief in the December of 1980, but perhaps the most memorable news story of the year was the siege of the Iranian Embassy in London by middle east terrorists who held 26 people hostage. Millions watched on television as, on the 5th of May, SAS soldiers launched a daring raid on the building, killing all of the terrorists and freeing each of the hostages.
This was a year in which broadcasting received a blow as, after many years on the air, Radio Caroline – once a legendary pirate station – came to an end when the ship it broadcast from sank.
