Full Description!
The 1980’s were a decade that promoted wealth and promised much, but in truth they were to lay the seeds for a much more troubled time to come. 1988, the year in which George Bush became President in the USA while Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as Prime Minister in Great Britain continued, will be remembered by many as a year in which international terrorism hit the world stage.
On December 21st over the town of Lockerbie in Scotland, Pan Am flight 103 was destroyed by a bomb planted by Libyan terrorists, killing all 259 passengers and several on the ground, and bringing the year to a close in gruesome and horrific style.
1988 had already seen the welcome end of the bloody eight year long war between Iran and Iraq, and in Britain the Clapham rail disaster in which 34 people lost their lives.
On a brighter note, those who wanted a pint of best in Britain could do so more frequently as the old law restricting the opening times of Public Houses was altered to allow all day opening, while the old pound note ceased to be legal tender.
Also in the news was the resumption of the US space shuttle programme, having been dormant for two years following the Challenger disaster in 1986, and the publication of the acclaimed book ‘A Brief History of Time’ by Stephen Hawking, while technological revelations came in the form of the Stealth Bomber, the radar invisible plane devised by the USA, and the launch of the Hubble Telescope, a device that would change the way we look at the universe.
