The year of 1991 saw the world on the cusp of great change as following the end of the Iran-Iraq war a few years prior, Saddam Hussein of Iraq began to build up his military forces. It was early in 1991 when Hussein’s forces moved into Kuwait with a show of force that the tiny oil rich country could hardly repel, and it was the response of a United Nations coalition force, which carried out a heavy and prolonged bombing campaign, which successfully drove the Iraqi forces back across the border. History would prove this was not the last we would hear of Hussein, however.

Meanwhile in central Europe war was about to erupt as Slovenia and Croatia each declared independence from Yugoslavia, thus sparking the beginning of what would become the tragic and very bloody Balkan War. Macedonia would also declare independence later in the year, while over in the Soviet Union things were not looking too stable either.

A political uprising in the USSR led to an attempted coup, but with this repressed the member states were left in disarray, and by the end of 1991 the Soviet Union would exist no more, in its place being a collection of independent countries including the Ukraine and Estonia.

This world of political turmoil played backdrop to perhaps the biggest technological change of the 20th century as it was in 1991 that the Internet became a commercial and freely available concern, while Microsoft was well on its way to world domination with the latest release of its MS Dos operating system.
