Anyone could be forgiven for thinking that there are only two important and well supported football clubs in Scotland – Rangers and Celtic, the Old Firm – but there are many others which draw on a strong fan base and support and which have been around for many a year. One such is Aberdeen FC, a club that plays its home games in the town known as the Granite City.
They play at Pittodrie Stadium, and have done since they were first formed in the distant year of 1903, and despite the dominance of the Old Firm two in the Scottish Premier League Aberdeen remain the last club other than any of the Glasgow giants to have won the league: that they did so as long ago as 1985 is not down to their lack of talent in recent years, but simply a display of just how big those other two teams have become.
The old stadium, to which the faithful flock every game, seats 22,000 people and holds the distinction of being the very first all seater and fully covered stadium in the UK; it was with Aberdeen, too, that the legendary Alex Ferguson – long time manager of Manchester United – first found success as a manager before heading south to Old Trafford.
Like many clubs playing out of older stadiums Aberdeen FC is currently looking at a newer home, one to be built not far away and to seat a more respectable 35,000 fans. This popular club deserves all the support it can get.
