The founders of the Football League, back in 1888, could not possibly know what it was they were starting, for this much loved game is now part and parcel of life, particularly among the towns and cities where it began. The midlands can count Aston Villa FC, one of the founding clubs, as one of their most famous sporting clubs, and it is no surprise when we look back at the history of this esteemed team.

Having played at Villa Park since 1897, Aston Villa is one of only four English clubs to have won the European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League), with victory in 1982, an accolade that is high praise indeed, and this well loved and highly regarded club has a whole host of supporters willing to show their allegiance with the famous claret and blue colours, one of the most attractive combinations in the league.

Villa Park, which will reach a capacity of 51,000 if current extension plans go ahead, was the first English ground to host international games across three centuries, having first done so in 1899 and as lately as 2005, and the ground is generally very well attended indeed.

Current manager Martin O’Neill is among the best in the business, a much sought after manager who has the task of taking Aston Villa back to the very top of the English game; to accomplish this will take great skill, investment and acumen, and the help of the passionate Aston Villa faithful, too. With the Premier League hard fought place at the moment it will be interesting to look out for Villa as a giant killing combination.
