The 12 teams that founded the Football League back in 1888 began something that would become an absolute giant in the world of sport, and to this day we should thank the daring dozen who took the plunge; Burnley FC may not be the most famous club in the world – or in England – but they were one of the founding dozen, and for that alone they should be saluted.
Turf Moor has been their home since 1883, and only one ground has been in continuous use for longer; it happens to be that of local rivals Preston North End, another old and famous Lancashire side.
It is fitting that as the club planned an expansion of the legendary old ground – one that would bring capacity up to 28,000 – the team had their best season in many a year, with a rejuvenated side gaining promotion to the Premier League, the top flight, after no less than 33 years away; that they then began the new season by beating the mighty Manchester United 1-0 at Turf Moor is a footnote in history as notable as any other.
Like many northern teams Burnley boasts a fanatical fan base, one that has its roots in local fervour more than international fame, and it is to be hoped that the Lancashire lads and lasses are to be rewarded with seasons of continued success with the owners drawing on the revenue from the Premiership status to enhance this much loved and historic, not to mention important, football club.
