One of London’s most popular football clubs, Chelsea FC was originally founded in 1905, marking the beginning of a long and very successful century to come. Stamford Bridge, the sole home of Chelsea FC for all of the clubs existence, predated the football club by a few decades and had been the home of the London Athletics Club before being purchased as a football ground, in the days when the sport was beginning to etch itself into the psyche of the British sporting fan.
Once and all standing stadium – like most others – with a capacity of over 100,000, this iconic ground is now all seated, as is compulsory, and can accommodate around 50,000 fans. As the stadium is located in a densely built up area the scope for enlargement is limited, hence the constant search for places to build a new stadium. Uniquely, parts of the stadium – the pitch itself and the turnstiles, plus the naming rights and the freehold, belong to Chelsea Pitch Owners, an organisation of fans and shareholders designed to ensure the stadium cannot be taken over for redevelopment.
With many lucrative and impressive successes to their name, Chelsea FC boasts a strong following of very loyal fans, many of whom travel avidly across the country to watch their team in action at away games and offer impressive vocal support. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abromavich, Chelsea is a club that has been able to assemble some impressive teams over the years and promises to remain one of the top clubs in the Premier League.
