Full Description!

London has a plethora of famous and iconic football clubs, all of which enjoy healthy and sometimes fierce rivalry with each other, and one of the more popular – albeit currently playing in the Championship, the second tier of English league football, is Crystal Palace.

The team was first seen in 1905, and back then played at a ground known a Park Hill Park, and arena known for holding cup final matches in the early days of the game. They soon moved to the now famous Selhurst Park, a ground that has become one that the fans and the club are very much attached to.

It is interesting to note that, despite being a London club, Crystal Palace’s main rival – the one with whom they are most often cited in derby matches – is Brighton and Hove Albion, which is located some 40 miles away from Selhurst Park! This curious connection came about a few decades ago when the two teams were the best supported in the then second division and away games became a magnet for each other. It has been sustained to this day and continues apace.

Crystal Palace has never been one of the most successful clubs in English football, its best results being league topping seasons and entry into the final of the FA Cup in 1990, but is recognised as pioneering the ‘academy’ style of player selection, a much copied method in which younger players are taken on board and nurtured until they are considered ready to join the first team.
