In the year 1888 twelve football clubs came together and made a decision that would change the face of the sport forever, one that would have far reaching consequences; one of those clubs was Derby County, a team from a small city in the midlands of England, and along with eleven cohorts they formed the Football League.
Like many clubs Derby County – known as the Rams thanks to their badge – sprung from an already existent cricket club, and while it plays currently in the Championship as opposed to the Premiership, home games draw healthy crowds to Pride Park, the home ground to which the team moved in 1997.
The state of the art stadium is one of a host of new facilities from the past twenty years, and replaced the clubs ancient and outdated Baseball Ground. While never reaching the heady heights of the very top flight of English football, Derby County have had some success in European competitions, but recent joys have been few and far between.
English football these days is dominated by a few clubs with considerable resources, and it is heartening to see that smaller clubs such as Derby still draw a faithful and supportive crowd; Pride Park is well attended and current manager Nigel Clough never fails to inspire the team to perform for the faithful. The club is one that has a long history replete with notable and sometimes very well known players, and as one of the original twelve it deserves to continue as well loved as it is today.
