Like many another city Liverpool is one that is synonymous with football, the great English game, and also like many other cities there are two top flight clubs to choose from on Merseyside.
Founder members of the Football League in 1888, Everton Football Club are one of the oldest in existence and match their home rivals Liverpool FC for popularity. They also hold a unique record, that of having played more games in the top league than any other English club, and they stand fourth in the list of all time league winners with nine victories.
Everton, nicknamed the Toffees, have not been absent from the Premier League since 1992 when it was founded, and they boast a very impressive record in many competitions across the years. Playing in the famous blue and white the team has been home to many a famous player, with the name of Dixie Dean, one of the best players of all time, etched on the fans memories.
Goodison Park is Everton’s traditional home, and the now 40,000 seater stadium was in fact the first dedicated football stadium to be built in the country in 1892, although the team curiously played at Anfield – now Liverpool’s home ground – prior to that.
Losing finalists in the FA cup in 2009, Everton – under manager David Moyes – always put out a very capable squad and are blessed with a fantastic level of support; home games are invariable over 90% capacity, and away travellers are many and vocal. One of the old boys of English football, Everton remains a firm favourite.
