Ipswich may seem an unlikely town to have produced some of the best footballing sides of all time, but Ipswich Town FC can genuinely lay claim to such an accolade, and to have nurtured some legendary players along the way.
Originating as an amateur side as long ago as 1878, it took until the 1930’s for the club to decide to turn professional and entry into the Football League came a couple of years later; Portman Road is their home stadium, and it has been the scene of many a legendary outing.
Quite remarkably, the first year in the top flight league saw them win the title – in 1962 – and it is remarkable in many ways that they have never repeated that performance, for this is a club that has had some very impressive teams and equally lauded managers along the way, not to mention a very loyal and vocal set of fans.
With a capacity of just over 30,000 Portman Road is not one of the countries bigger grounds, but is one of very few to feature statues of two legendary managers, Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson – giants in the sport who took the helm at Ipswich during the most glorious of days. The former was the architect of the league title in the 1960’s, the latter took the team to FA Cup victory in 1978 and a magnificent European Cup victory in 1981. Both will be remembered forever by Ipswich fans, and this friendly and enduring club will persevere for years to come.
