It is harsh to think of Manchester City Football Club as the second club in that city, yet the giant that is Manchester United, the Citizens deadly rival, is such that it has to be that way. Furthemore, while Manchester City tends to be the team of choice to many Mancunians, the worldwide support of United is much greater than any other club and leads to comparisons being irrelevant.
However, there is little doubt that Manchester City remain one of the best supported and most loved teams in the English game, as is exemplified by the impressive turnouts at the new state of the art City of Manchester Stadium, a ground for which they left their beloved Maine Road in 2003 after 80 years of continuous use.
Maine Road will remain in the record books as it was party to the biggest ever crowd at a club game when 84,569 people watched the team play Stoke City in a cup tie in 1934, and with all seated stadiums now the norm it may be that this will never be exceeded.
The new stadium, however, offers a current capacity of almost 48,000, considerably more than the restricted Maine Road did, and while the club has not achieved great success in recent years its purchase by an Abu Dhabi conglomerate in 2008 is believed to have made it the richest football club in the world, with the specific aim of eclipsing the near neighbours in red being the owners clear and obvious intention.
