English football has many legendary names in its illustrious past, and present, and one of the most famous worldwide is that of Newcastle United, the iconic ‘magpies’ in their black and white shirts.
Having played at the stunning St James’ Park stadium for their entire existence, Newcastle United can lay claim to one of the longest tenures at the same ground for this is a club originally founded in 1892.
Although a famous and very well supported club – indeed the ‘Toon Army’ is respected as one of the most ardent and passionate fan bases in sport as a whole – it is curious to look back at the results, for the lack of silverware at St James’ is quite noticeable. The team last won the top flight league title as long ago as 1927, the FA cup in 1955 and the Fairs Cup in 1969 being their last major success.
Despite this the stadium is regularly filled to the capacity 52,000, the third highest capacity stadium in English football. In recent years the club was bought by sports retailing millionaire Mike Ashley, and despite his promises of investment things have not gone his way with the club being relegated from the Premier Division at the close of the 2008-2009 season.
The team started the new team without a manager in place and in some disarray, yet still with fervent and very vocal support although a long way from the days when legends such as Jackie Milburn, Malcolm MacDonald and Kevin Keegan graced the pitch.
