Nottingham is a city that, like many, has two resident football clubs, yet it is the younger Nottingham Forest, a team that ranks as one of the oldest in the country having been originally formed in 1865 (a couple of years after neighbours Notts County, who are believed to be the oldest professional football team in the world), that ranks as the most famous.
As one of the original members of the football league Notts Forest – as the abbreviated name would have it – has been around for almost 150 years, and in that time has seen much success and much heartbreak, too. Perennial runners in the current first division, Nottingham Forest are none the less a very well supported club, and the ground – the City Ground – is one of the biggest non-premiership grounds in England with a capacity of over 30,000.
Famous players include Billy Walker, Stuart Pearce and Brian Clough among others, and with success in the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 being their most recent major achievements – remarkable ones at that – Nottingham Forests army of very defiant fans must be hoping that something comes good for them soon.
Plans are underfoot to build a newer state of the art stadium in another part of the city, but how this fits in with the current financial climate remains to be seen, and while current manager Billy Davies has a fight on his hands to achieve anything worthwhile, he can rest assured the fans of this passionately loved club will not desert him.
