Portsmouth FC may not be a club that springs to mind when asked to name a long standing and successful English football club, but this well supported team – from the south coast town after which they take their name – has been around, and playing at the same ground Fratton Park, since 1898.

FA Cup winners in 2008, Portsmouth fans have a team of which they can be proud, and one that has been through several ups and downs during its lengthy life. Currently residing in the Premier League, that Pompey – as they are affectionately known – plays in the top flight of English football proves that fairytales do happen.

While Fratton Park is the much loved ground and has been in use for over 100 years, like many similar grounds of its age it is, despite improvements, hampered both by location and infrastructure; having remained in the Premier League for a commendable amount of time, Portsmouth FC is looking to build a new stadium in the nearby area, one that is intended to seat 40,000 fans – a much higher number than the quaint and legendary current arena can accommodate.

Despite the continuation at the highest level Portsmouth FC has undergone a number of managerial changes in recent years and is currently subject to much speculation as to who goes where; this sort of attention does not do anything to dilute the support of the loyal and dedicated fans, many of whom follow the Pompey faithful across the country for a myriad of away games.
