Queens Park Rangers, commonly known as QPR, are one of London’s older football clubs and one, also, with a successful pedigree. Named as the team originally played in Queens Park, back in 1882, the club moved to the Loftus Road ground in 1917. Like all clubs QPR have long standing healthy rivalries with local opponents, in this case mainly Chelsea and Fulham.
It is interesting that, for two periods – one in the 1930’s and one in the 1960’s – QPR moved to White City Stadium in order to try and attract bigger crowds, but on both occasions returned to Loftus Road eventually. In fact, QPR has the record for the most home grounds of one club, having been at no fewer than 14 before settling in to Loftus Road.
All of this house moving has done QPR little good of late for while this is a well supported club it is not one that can point to much in the way of recent success; runners up in the FA Cup in 1982 is the nearest the team has come to any great success, and it currently resides in the Championship.
QPR has become more famous for its recent financial shenanigans, with a takeover – at £14million – by Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore in 2007 leading to them inviting billionaire Lakshmi Mittal to take over some of the shares, and the role of Briatore in particular has been mired in controversy from the start with fans becoming increasingly frustrated at a merry go round of managers and players.
