Founded in 1867 Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest professional football clubs not just in England but in the world. This small city, famous for its steel production, plays host to two football teams – the other being Wednesdays great rivals Sheffield United – but it is The Wednesday and their famous Hillsborough ground that will come to mind when talking of football in the city.

The name comes from an early incarnation as a cricket club, the Wednesday Cricket Club, so called after the day on which they met, and stuck when the football team was formed. Hillsborough, now a stadium that seats almost 40,000 and originally built in 1899, was not the first home of the club, and has become famous for a more upsetting tale than the team would have liked.

The famous Hillsborough disaster, a tragedy that took place at the stadium during a cup match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in 1989, resulted in the deaths of 96 Liverpool supporters and led to a major rethink in the way stadiums were designed and restricted.

Success at the highest level has only visited Wednesday in the earlier days, with FA Cup titles to their name three times, the latest being in 1935, and despite a seemingly permanent residence in the second tier of the league the club remains strongly supported.

Nicknamed The Owls thanks to the bird on their crest, Sheffield Wednesday has a history that is worthy of note, and remains a stalwart team in the English league.
