One of the most famous of London Clubs, Tottenham Hotspur – or Spurs as they are commonly known – is also one of the most successful, and holds the distinction of being the first team in the 20th century to achieve the ‘double’ – winning the league and the FA cup – which they did in the 1960-61 season. Furthermore, Spurs are the only team other than Manchester United to have secured a trophy in each of the last six decades – an achievement of the highest proportions.
Originally formed in 1882, Spurs rank as one of the older clubs in the league, although they played in the Southern League only until joining the football league in 1908. Playing by then at the now legendary White Hart Lane, the team went through several decades of indifferent performances until fortunes were revived in the 1960’s, a decade when Tottenham ran riot in the cup competitions and fostered many legendary players: Danny Blanchflower and Jimmy Greaves remain two of the most famous players from that era, both Tottenham men.
White Hart Lane has undergone much in the way of growth and development in the recent decades, but remains a smaller Premier League stadium with just over 36,000 seats. There are plans afoot to build a 60,000 seater stadium in the vicinity.
