It is a sure thing that every northern industrial town or city will have a football club of some sort, and in Sunderland Football Club this former shipbuilding city has a team of which it can be very proud indeed. Along with great rivals Newcastle United and Middlesboro FC, Sunderland makes up the triumvirate of top of the line North East football clubs, a region in which the sport is almost a religion to many.
Founded in 1879, this is one of the oldest clubs in the region and in the early part of the 20th century gained considerable success. Of late, however, the club has begun a difficult climb back from a number of years of below par performances and is seemingly cemented, at last, in the Premier League.
The last major success by Sunderland came in the FA Cup in 1973, a competition they also won in 1937, and it was hoped that a move from the old Roker Park stadium, home to the club since 1898, to the modern and state of the art Stadium of Light, now a 49,000 seat stadium built on reclaimed land, would herald greater success and the signs are that this is a team that is enjoying something of a resurgence.
With manager Steve Bruce at the helm and an impressive list of players, Sunderland van claim to have some of the most vocal fans in English football, and their attempts to drown out the Toon Army faithful at local derby matches remain the stuff of legend.
