Among the famous names of English football are the twelve founding members of the original Football League, and among these the name of West Bromwich Albion is one that stands out. West Brom, as the club is known for short, has an illustrious history that includes five successes in the FA Cup competition. It is fitting that first came their way in 1888, the year the league was formed, and unfortunate plus telling that the latest came 80 years later, in 1968.
This is not an indication of a desperate fall from grace for West Brom, but of the competitive and changing nature of English football; gone are the gentlemen players of the past and in come the big businesses that drive all sport these days.
Having played at The Hawthorns since 1900 the team are proud of their heritage and continue to walk out for home matches at an improved 28,000 seat version of this historic ground. West Brom can lay claim to a sterling and stalwart support, one that is just as likely to send a contingent a few hundred miles to an away game as it is to fill the stadium to capacity at home, and this will continue despite the recent run in the Premiership coming to a sad end for the 2009-2010 season when West Brom will play again in the second tier of the league.
Nevertheless, this historic and well loved club shows no signs of giving up and The Hawthorns may well reverberate once more to Premiership crowds in no time at all.
