Full Description!

In the early days of football it was common for major industrial plants to form teams, and once such was the Thames Ironworks, where a group of workmates formed a team in 1895. Renamed West Ham United Football Club in 1905, they joined the Football league in 1919 and have remained as one of the capitals most popular clubs ever since.

Losing finalists in the very first FA Cup competition in 1923, West Ham – or the Hammers – have had an illustrious career, and have fostered many famous players along the way. Playing their home matches at the Boleyn Ground, West Ham are famed for rivalries with other London Clubs, in particular Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, and the loyal following the club have brought up means these meetings in particular will be fervently attended.

The famous stadium currently has a capacity of around 35,000 and is generally full on match days, and the travelling contingent of avid supporters follows the team around the country.

When West Ham won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965 they were playing in the precursor to the successful 1996 World Cup in which England triumphed over West Germany, but what is often forgotten is that all of the England goals in the final were scored by West Ham players, with legend Bobby Moore to the fore.

An old club with a great history, West Ham often turn out top class teams and beat more illustrious rivals, and present manager Gianfranco Zola, himself a legend in European football, will be hoping for a successful season to come.
