There are few clubs that have played a greater part in the advancement of football than Wolverhampton Wanderers, commonly referred to simply as ‘Wolves’, the team from the midlands of England that was one of the founding members of the original Football League in 1888, for this is a club that was also highly instrumental in the creation of the European Cup competition, now the highly popular and hotly contested UEFA Champions League.
In the early years of the 20th century Wolves were a very successful team indeed, yet despite their illustrious history and trailblazing attitude modern success has been hard to come by. Nevertheless the Molineux Stadium, home of the team since 1889, is one that is historically well attended for Wolves fans tend to show their loyalty with great passion.
The stadium in its present form holds over 29,000 people and is often full, and the current owners have announced plans to expand the ground to seat 40,000 people after the club, much to the delight of the followers, graduated to the Premier League for the 2009-10 season after winning the Championship in some style the year before.
Top flight football is, of course, not new to Wolves but these days it is difficult to secure a place in the upper echelon and to keep it; manager Mick McCarthy has the experience and the knowledge to help them on the way, and has already demonstrated this by driving them to promotion. The Molineux faithful will be hoping that their historic club is now set for a return to the big time.
